Maggie, thank you SO much for taking the time to post this in so much detail. I have been really nervous about this, even though I've needed to do it for about a year now. I'm very worried, but your post is putting me at ease -- even the parts where you mention the parts that might crash. :) Just knowing other people are doing this makes me more confident!

Thanks again!

Hi Naz,

No, leave your old WP blog open. You need it open in order to do the migration. Once you're finished, you can then set up a redirect from the old one to the new one so that anyone trying to reach the old one automatically gets sent to the new one. But the old one still has to be open for this to work.

Cheers,
Maggie

Hi Maggie,

Before migrating from wp.com to wp.org, must I closed/cancel my wp.com blog?

Thanks

Hi Maggie,

I downloaded your pages on migrating from wordpress.com to wordpress.org and truly thank you for the information.

I am basically computer literate and love my .com application. I am a fairly regular writer and am worried about the process of converting. I am not a html or xml programmer. I am pretty much illiterate on php and mysql. Will this be a problem? I note on a lot of the items I read that on the new .org site I will be able to add code, codes, paragraph directly into files....is that a screen ability to just insert when found or must I know exactly where, How, and how to do this stuff...as you can see I am a little gun shy...could you browns my site on http://www.wordpress.com or type yizzit? in google. I would appreciate your input as to problems you see that I might have if I migrate to .org,

The reason I want to do this soon....is I just started on August 25, 2010. It was and is my first blogging experience...I love to write and pretend I am a Walter Cronkite in the making. I also would like to supplement my income with a new approach to home based marketing or writing...long winded question, I am sorry but do thank you for your time.

I looke on the justblue web serving site...do they have all the things you mentioned to look for...please help me...relhurg (jon)

And now I've finished reading the comments. I will take the heads up and create a text file that has the tags copied and pasted, in case my tags don't migrate. Bummer! at least my blog is young, about 45 posts total, and at least I know in advance!

Thanks Maggie, thanks commenters,

Thanks so much for such a well thought out article. I am about to make this move, and it is a little daunting--there are probably many people like me who are not programmers or coders, and were attracted to the wordpress.com platform because it was easy, only to find that it's not good for social sharing, and it's like black and white compared to .org's technicolor in terms of features. Yours is the first article I encountered that actually laid out the steps in chrono order, which is what I had been looking for.

Thanks,

Hi Jose,

1. I think there is a way to migrate from Wordpress.org to Wordpress.com, but I'm not sure of the details, sorry.

2. You cannot upload your own theme, you'll have to select from the available themes. You can however use CSS to customize those themes for a $10 yearly fee.

3. You cannot upload custom plugins of any kind. Some plugins/widgets are available to use from Wordpress.com

4. Wordpress.com is free. There are fees for extra services such as being able to use CSS as mentioned above.

Just a note. Wordpress.com is somewhat limited in functionality compared with Wordpress.org. Also, you cannot monetize your Wordpress.com site.

I hope that helps a little.
Cheers,
Maggie

Yep, I had to redo all of my video links manually, YouTube or otherwise.

I don't remember experiencing the post dates issue you described. Not sure what could be causing that.

And thirdly, yes I was missing the tags as well. I'm trying to remember what I did to fix that. I'm traveling for a while now, but I'll try to get a chance and go back and look at it. It might have been a new plugin I added or something... I'll let you know what I find.

Cheers,
Maggie

Hi Maggie. Great post.

In the last two days i've migrated from worpress.com to wordpress.org and have experienced several of the problems you have mentioned...as well as some that you havn't!

Firstly..the youtube video's that were embedded in my wordpress.com blog now only show up on my wordpress.org blog as links that dont work. I am able to create new posts where the videos show up and work fine but all the previous posts that were imported dont show the videos.

Do i really have to go back and re-embed the code for all my videos?!

Secondly..some of the imported posts at the wordpress.org blog dont show the date they were posted.

Thirdly..the wordpress.com posts included tags at the foot of each post. These are absent in the wordpress.org posts.

Any advice?

Hi Sal,

You're pretty much limited to the themes provided by wordpress.com. But, there are over 60 of them and some are quite nice. Once you pick one, you'll probably have to re-layout your content to fit your chosen theme.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Maggie

Nice Blog. I just cancelled my professionally hosted site to a free wordpress.com blog, and have been sad not able to transfer the nice theme over. The free blog's theme is limited. Wonder is it possible to download a nicer theme from other source and how.

Hi Maggie,
Thanks for this post - I only have one or two Youtube links in my posts so I hadn't spotted they had broken on import to my bubblegumkitten.com domain. Also the internal links - very good point. Now I think about it, I have several posts from last year where I added links to related posts. It is great to have someone pointing out those little things we might otherwise miss when moving over a blog to a new domain.
Thank you for sharing your experiences :)

Hi Lori, thanks for stopping by. If I'm understanding your question, just go to:
http://www.yourblogname.com/wp-admin/

That should get you to your login prompt. Hope that helps.

Cheers,
